Charybdis

In the second installment of the ITHAKA series, the ship that had set sail with so many good intentions and high expectations... has encountered Charybdis, the whirlpool. Suddenly the world and the sea are a blur. Pieces of the ship swirl around, helpless against the power of nature or the will of the gods.

I haven't found a good way to articulate my thoughts on this piece, except to say this series is somewhat autobiographical. The hopeful, optimistic nature of the first quilt ("As You Set Out") reflects my mindset back in the summer/ early fall, while "Charybdis" is a metaphor for the past few months. A lot can happen in a short period of time, sometimes leaving us feeling like we're caught in a whirlpool.

I used many of the same fabrics from the first quilt to the second. My idea was to tie them together narratively and to emphasize the change in energy and tone. From calm to chaos.
